Cereal Box Challenge

I'm really proud to be running alongside and against? Chris Blanton and Becky Kwiatkowski.  I do believe that both of these candidates have an authentic desire to do what is best for all of our students.  It was fun meeting up with them to buy a bunch of boxes of cereal for the Horace Mann Cereal Box Challenge.

Behind the enjoyment of meeting up with my running mates, doing something good and taking some funny photos is an uncomfortable reality that our schools interact with daily:
Students show up everyday hungry.
When I mention 'security' in my campaign, I think about how food insecurity is a deterrent to our children becoming the literate and prepared adults of our future.  As a community, to give our kids the best education possible means to have them in the best condition to learn.  When our school district is reliably the place where a hungry child knows they can get a snack without stigma, it builds the kind of trust we want to see in our society, and puts our student in the condition to do what they came to do:  learn!

Last year, the top vote getter for the school board elections was Lauri Asbury who collected 5,426 votes.   Horace Mann set a goal to collect 700 food boxes.

I spent $17.37 on 6 boxes of cereal pictured to donate.  That equates to $2.90 per box-- or $2,030 to achieve the 700 boxes.  If all of Lauri Asbury's voters split the cost of 700 cereal boxes, they would all spend 37¢.
If we posit that some of Lauri Asbury's voters are the same people that should be receiving those boxes of cereal, then it seems odd to envision them donating to the food drive.  So, if we apply the 80/20 rule, and say that...

80% of Lauri Asbury's voters are in a position to donate:            47¢ per donating voter to get to 700 boxes
80% of Lauri Asbury's voters are NOT in a position to donate:   $1.87 per donating voter to get to 700 boxes

I hope that Horace Mann destroys their goal of 700.
